This work about an experience in distant open education in the state of Ceará in Brazil, using newspaper and radio. Based on the experience of the University of Brasília, Democrito Rocha Fundation made a choice of operating the program at local level, by adding changes, and the participation of the universities in the region, creating conditions of mintenance through partnerships with public or private social institutions and finally conceiving a graphic project that made possible the translation of the academic language to a more acessible language, to reach the heterogeneus and multifaced public that is the newspaper reader and the radio listener. In the late 14 years, the Open University of the Northeast already offered 36 courses, had as partners 15 public universities and counted with more than 1.000 university teachers in the elaboration of issues, transmitting courses in 9 newspapers and 45 radio stations of the northeast region. The model which was constructed to garantee the continuity of the program is based on a three-legged support: communication means - newspaper and radio, the great and recognized academic production of the universities and the parternerships with social institutions that given financial support.
