The Problem Of Students Permanence In Universitary Distance Education In Costa Rica: The Case Of The Uned Costa Rica As Anstrategic Tool For Developing Countries

This paper intends to determine the causes and possiblesolutions for the problem of student permanence in Costa Ricandistance education system. The first part of the research hasinformative purposes in order to understand how the UniversidadEstatal a Distancia of Costa Rica works and thus comprehend theempiric study. The second part includes aspects such as objectives,variables, and methodology. It is important to mention that this oneis a descriptive paper that aims to establish a relationship of causesthat may result in dropping-out. The sample (182 students) belongs tothe 1990īs cohort, which has quit studying, and that has notregistered again from 1992 to 1995. Main results are exhibited incharts and graphics. Conclusions deal with studentīs social and familyconditions, literacy, academic dificulties, lack of universitaryenvironment, lack of discipline when studying. Analysis of results isbased on the given causes in order to solve the problem. The finalproposal is to develop a program of integral attention for thestudent, to descentralize services and to appease physical well-beingand a full emotional and social development of the student.
