VTEL Symposium, where VTEL will present the session called " The Classroom of the Future….TODAY"

Tuesday, 22 June, 11.00-12.30, Room 2

We live in exciting times because technology and emerging telecommunications systems (ISDN, Satellite, LAN, ATM and streaming audio and video with QOS) are empowering universities, corporations, teachers, instructors and students for higher levels of success! The classroom of the future is here and operational today! It is called the Virtual and Flexible Classroom or University.

To create this successful and easy-to-use model, we must understand what it is and how it works. In general, this model is a university system that transitions from the traditional classroom to the electronic classroom and merges three main technologies of our society together. This is called the transition zone for the virtual university. The zone is comprised of elements of Information Systems (IS), elements of audio and video processing and elements of Telecommunications. This model allows "teachers to be teachers and not technicians or Hollywood Stars". Additionally, it provides a process for the university to increase enrollment while providing the highest levels of quality interactive teaching and learning! This process delivers interactive instruction to students in a SYNCHRONOUS and ASYNCHRONOUS environment from a single classroom! Therefore, I as the teacher for today's class may be teaching to four synchronous university locations (same time, different locations) and simultaneously teaching to students at home or in the office via the Internet with quality of service and quality of instruction for all! A student at home can access the class at the scheduled synchronous time or access the class during the middle of the night and watch it as many times as desired.

Main points using effective face-to-face communications and an interactive live link to Austin Texas to demonstrate this classroom:

  • What is the Virtual Classroom and University
  • What does it look like, Live link to Austin, Texas
  • How to design, build, implement and service this process for success
  • Results from several global implementations, including case study from the Director, Academy of International Education, Bonn, Germany
  • Why instructor training is important for success
  • How to achieve a level C2 (comfort and confidence) for the instructor
  • What is the cost? What is the return upon investment?
  • An interactive question and answer period
  • Summary and conclusion

This session and information shared will be based upon my extensive experiences as a user of the technology in a global environment.
