Die Arbeit des Instituts vollzog sich in Projekten, denen nicht nur Mitarbeiter des ZIFF angehörten, sondern auch Mitarbeiter aus anderen Einrichtungen und in letzter Zeit verstärkt auch Kooperationspartner aus dem Ausland. Die Forschungsergebnisse wurden in mehreren Reihen veröffentlicht: die bekannteste ist die Reihe der insgesamt 126 ZIFF-Papiere
According to the statutes of the university the ZIFF had the task to do basic and applied research on distance education and to teach about the methods of DE. The work of the institute was organized in projects in cooperation with the departments and carried through also by inter- institutional and international consortia more and more funded by different programs of the EU. Results of all projects and studies are published, the most renown series is ZIFF Papiere, of which during the last 30 years 126 separate issues appeared alongside with many books and project reports.
