Leonardo has bequeathed a veritable legacy of drawings on a
wide range of
themes: anatomical charts, stratagems
mechanisms, animals, still life.
These are reference points which
give testimony to the spirit of observation
and the multi-faceted
genius of the author. The design which we have selected
as a
logo for the Voctade project was created in 1508,
using ink and
brown wash with blue chalk applied by pen strokes.
Below the plough the words 'hostinato rigor' appear, written
from right to left in accordance with Leonardo's custom.
The emblem may be interpreted as a metaphor for scientific
endeavour. To plough a furrow was a labour which necessitated
both diligence and precision, like that of the researcher: the
motto: 'hostinato rigor' highlights the need of repeating time
after time, indeed with obstinacy, the same procedures and of
scrupulously observing methodological rigour necessary in the
field of experimental research.

Studi di Roma III and is reproduced with their authorisation.
