3 Presentation and visualisation of data

The visual presentation of data through comprehensible
and flexible graphical tools crucially contributes to
communicate messages behind statistical information at
first glance. Hence, efficient communication of
statistical information requires to go beyond the simple
provision of statistical tables and to apply appropriate
graphical tools.
This chapter presents graphical instruments widely
applied in statistics. The chapter will also touch on
user-friendly interactive visualization instruments that
offer space for ad-hoc exploration of large data sets.
Statistical Offices are increasingly making use of such
flexible visualization tools.
