The digital transformation brought about by AI presents universities with challenges: How can teaching and learning be successfully designed in the AI era?

Solutions for the university of the future

The CATALPA research centre — the Centre of Advanced Technology for Assisted Learning and Predictive Analytics at the FernUniversität in Hagen — provides answers thanks to its unique real-world laboratory structure, which combines theoretical knowledge and practical application. AI's effects and potential are researched interdisciplinarily within a protected environment, and prototypes are ultimately transferred to regular operation with over 75,000 students, via iterative processes.

COFFEE - Corrective Formative Feedback

AI-supported scalable formative feedback on free-text assignments with the application

COFFEE is an application that supports teachers in providing feedback on solutions to free-text assignments for students. Teachers can enter their own free-text assignments in COFFEE in combination with the corresponding assessment criteria and specific learning context and efficiently create feedback for their teaching. Students receive feedback specific to their submitted solution at the touch of a button using generative AI in COFFEE.

FLEXI - FernUni LLM Experimental Infrastructure

Open infrastructure for large language models

The FLEXI (FernUniversität LLM Experimental Infrastructure) project at FernUniversität in Hagen is providing an open infrastructure for large language models (LLMs). Its aim is to facilitate innovative experiments and research in higher education, as well as evaluating the benefits of locally operated, open LLMs compared to commercial cloud services.

JELAI - Jupyter Environment for Learning Analytics and AI

Feedback and motivation through AI agents

AI-based educational agents can motivate learners by providing immediate feedback and support. At the same time, there is concern that learners may skip important steps in the self-regulated learning process (e.g., goal setting, instrumental help-seeking, self-reflection). JELAI addresses these risks by providing learners with targeted support in developing key learning skills while giving teachers insight into their students' learning processes.
