Entwicklung interkultureller Kompetenz bei Jugendlichen in multiethnischen Kontexten[12.12.2018]
Im Rahmen des Fakultätskolloquiums wird Frau Miriam Schwarzenthal (Univ. Potsdam) einen Vortrag zum Thema „The Development of Intercultural Competence among Adolescents Attending Culturally Diverse Schools in Germany“ halten.
Frau Schwarzenthal wird im Lehrgebiet Bildungspsychologie zu Gast sein.
Abstract des Vortrags:
I will give an overview of my dissertation project in which I explored the development of intercultural competence among adolescents attending culturally diverse schools in Germany. Drawing on previous research in developmental, social, and cross-cultural psychology, I hypothesized that developmental aspects (e.g., age and ethnic identity exploration), positive intercultural interactions (e.g., through intercultural friendships or a contact and cooperation climate at school), and active engagement with diverse perspectives (e.g., through intercultural socialization in friendships or a multicultural school climate) are all related to adolescents’ intercultural competence. I tested these relations empirically based on three datasets that were collected in schools in three different regions in Germany. Intercultural competence was assessed using a combination of newly developed self-report measures and situational judgment tests. My findings show that cultural diversity in schools is not only a challenge, but under certain conditions also a resource and an opportunity for individual development.
