Expertise in Far-Eastern Law

First Japan, then Korea, and soon Taiwan: A competence center for East-Asian law is being developed at Hagen University.

Jun. Prof. Dr. Julius Weitzdörfer (Junior Professor of East Asian Law, in particular Japanese Law) describes his research stay in Korea in August and September as particularly productive. During this trip, sponsored by the International Office and the Institute for International Legal Relations, the legal expert from Hagen University gained numerous insights and established valuable connections for research and teaching. Over the course of around fifteen appointments at nine universities and the Constitutional Court, he has succeeded in recruiting a dozen Korean guest authors to contribute to a planned graduate programme on Korean law.

The new course offering will be similar to the existing one in Japanese law and will start in 2024. Both courses are therefore unique: Outside of East Asia, there are no comparable opportunities to study the respective legal systems at university level (certificate) – anywhere in the world. In the process, Weitzdörfer is enhancing the profile of the junior professorship. A similar course on Taiwanese law is planned for 2025, as well as an integrated LL.M. course that will combine the modules of all three legal systems.
