Law in the Far East

On a research trip to Taiwan, Prof. Weitzdörfer gained numerous insights and established useful connections with experts for the graduate programme on Taiwanese law.

After Junior Professor Dr Weitzdörfer (Junior Professor for East Asian Law) successfully enlisted several guest authors for a course on Korean law (set to launch in October) during his trip to Korea in September 2023, plans are now underway for a course on Taiwanese law.

Prof. Weitzdörfer and his assistant Leonard Kosub made the most of a research trip to Taiwan at the beginning of May to recruit several experts who will contribute to the planned programme as guest authors of the study packs. Mr. Kosub’s trip was made possible by the Dean’s Office of the Faculty of Law as part of the internal research funding programme for young researchers.

The stops on the trip included the National Taiwan University, Soochow University, National Chengchi University, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, and the Academia Sinica. There were also official visits to the Director General of the German Institute in Taipei, the Goethe Institute, the DAAD, and the German Chamber of Foreign Trade.

The contributing professors have a doctorate from Germany and have shown great interest in collaborating on the eleven planned study packs. They are very keen to introduce German students to Taiwanese law and are looking forward to taking part in the project.

The new study program will be similar to the existing one in Japanese law and the course concurrently being developed for Korean law and is expected to start in mid-2025. All three courses are therefore unique: Outside of East Asia, there are no comparable opportunities to study the respective legal systems with university degrees – anywhere in the world. An integrated LL.M. programme on East Asian law, which combines the modules of the three legal systems, is planned for the end of 2025.
