Task

In the course of its "e-Science-Wissensvernetzung" initivative, the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (Bundesministerium für Bildung und Forschung, BMBF) promotes projects that bring e-science and networked knowledge management into applications. The goal behind is to foster innovative approaches for the collaboration of scientific disciplines as well as professional information and information-technology service providers in networks of scientific organizations. The initiative's overall complexity demands coordination of activities far beyond regular project administration. Moreover, the integration, dissemination and exploitation of results requires planning from an organizational level above the promoted projects.

At first, links4science aims at consulting and supporting the projects promoted by the BMBF-initiative "e-Science-Wissensvernetzung" in integrating their results. The enterprise will contribute to updating the e-science promotion program. This includes the cooperation, the use, and the exploitation of future promoted projects for the construction of a scientific and innovative infrastructure for e-science and the interrelated future characteristics of collaborative, scientific work as well as the provision of information.

At second, links4science compasses the integration of technical solutions and services created by the promoted projects. All achievements will contribute to one common solution, that is independent from technical platforms, spans scientific domains, and overcomes organisational borders. Ensuring user-centric design forms an important sub-goal. In order to achieve this, the enterprise enables tight cooperation of promoted projects and scientific communities as primary users.

The e-science initiative as the central infrastructure for scientific work to be requires broad involvement of researchers. On account of this, the mobilization of a critical mass of users on the one hand and the creation of awareness at the other hand is, at third, another important enterprise goal.

Approach

Together with actors of the initiative, links4science will create, reflect, refine, update, and continue concepts for the implementation of a coordination, networking, integration, and indentation strategy.

The reconnaissance enterprise accomodates the urgent needs for networking, coordination and integration in a straight way. In the reconnaissance, links4science immediately starts operations and tackles the issues of the main project.

The goal is to have first working results meanwhile the far more substantial main project gets prepared.
