Lieutenant-general Devogelaere (1962) starts his military career in 1980 at the Royal Military Academy as a student of the 120th “all branches” promotion. In 1985 he joins the 1st Para Battalion as platoon commander, subsequently he is appointed instructor in the Commando Training Centre, and in 1990 he is appointed commander of a para-commando company in the 3rd Para Battalion. In 1991 he participates with his company in Operation BLUE BEAM in ZAIRE. He is appointed instructor in the International Long Range Reconnaissance Patrol School at Weingarten – Germany from 1992 to 1994. After his candidate senior officers’ education course he becomes tactics instructor at the infantry school for candidate majors and company commanders. In 1997 he is appointed operations and training officer of the 3rd Para Battalion. Following the General Staff Course at the Führungsakademie in Hamburg he is a plans & policy officer (G5 branch) at EUROCORPS in STRASBOURG from 2001 to 2003. Upon his return to Belgium he becomes the operations and training officer of the para-commando brigade and subsequently of the IRCC (Immediate Reaction Capability Command). In 2005 he assumes command of the 3rd Para Battalion. He participates with a detachment of the battalion in the BELUFIL 2 mission in LEBANON. In 2007 he is assigned to the Land Component Staff, first as coordination officer in the operations and training staff section, then in 2009 as operations officer (G3), and subsequently as chief of staff (2012). Within the framework of his operational and command duties he is deployed to the DRC and to Afghanistan several times for short periods. From 12 September 2013 to 16 June 2014 he holds the position of commander of the Land Component Competence Centre. On 16 June 2014 he is appointed commander of the Light Brigade and he holds this position until November 2016. On 19 December 2016, he assumes command of the European Training Mission in Mali, until 12 July 2017. Promoted to Major general in June 2017, as from 16 August 2017 he is operations director at the private office of the Minister of Defence. In December 2018 he is assigned chief Cabinet at the office of the Minister of Defence. 19 Oct 2020 he is appointed Inspector General. He is promoted to Lieutenant-general on 26 June 2021 and takes command of the EuroCorps on 02 September 2021.
