In the years 2009 to 2011 the Department of Instructional Technology and Media participated in the project “EU-VIP (Enterprise-University Virtual Placements)” which was fostered by the European Commission. The aim of this project was to compile and evaluate the possibilities of the implementation and supervision of virtual internships in education. Beside the FernUniversität in Hagen fifteen further partners also participated in the project: Media and Learning Unit, Katholieke Universiteit Leuven (BE), Aalto University (FI), BEST (FR), Coimbra Group (BE), EAL, TietgenSkolen (DK), EADTU (NL), EFMD (BE), EuroPACE ivzw (BE), Laurea University (FI), KHLeuven (BE), University of Padua (IT), University of Bologna (IT), University of Turku (FI), University of Groningen (NL), West Pomerian Business School (PL).

Within the scope of the project the Department of Instructional Technology and Media, represented by Claudia Schrader and Theo Bastiaens, and the Aalto University were responsible for the leadership of the Working Package WP2. The first step within this work was an entire analysis of the relevant literature concerning this central topic. On its basis instructional designs have been developed for virtual or virtual-supported internships. A specific scenario for virtual-supported internships has been implemented into the practical module of the Bachelors Degree Program B.A. Bildungswissenschaft (B.A. Educational Science). It has been tested successfully during a pilot study.
