[20.06.2026]Department Presents Research on CCU and Civic Participation in Lausanne
How can technological innovations contribute to a sustainable and just future? And how can their development and deployment be shaped democratically?
These questions were the focus of the international conference “Towards a Just and Habitable World: Exploring the Role of Technology,” which took place June 2–5, 2026, at the University of Lausanne.
The department was represented by a poster presentation from Dr. Julia-Lena Reinermann and Hannah Charlotte Müller. Under the title “Deliberative Communication for a Just Carbon Transition,” the researchers presented a citizen consultation on communication and participation in the context of CCU.

The focus was on the question of how citizens can be involved in the public discussion about CCU technologies. The presentation highlighted that a just transition to a climate-neutral society does not depend solely on technological solutions. Equally important are transparent communication processes, civic participation, and democratic decision-making structures.
New Ideas for Future Projects
The conference brought together researchers from various disciplines and countries to discuss the opportunities and limitations of technological developments in light of climate change, biodiversity loss, and social inequality. This international exchange provided the department with valuable insights for further research and future projects.
