- Abstract:
Since women are still underrepresented in information systems (IS), IS education seeks to attract more young women to the field. Although introductory events have been argued to be an important intervention against underrepresentation, little is known about the potential risks and barriers associated with them. Our study contributes to this body of knowledge by demonstrating that IS introductory events should be examined in light of
risks from contextual social factors, particularly negative stereotypes. Linear regression analysis of an experiment with 96 young women from Germany in upper secondary education shows that exposure to stereotype-relevant cues before engaging in introductory, practical IS tasks increases stereotype endorsement. Importantly, we identify that intrinsic interest in the practical IS tasks mitigates this effect. Consequently, we emphasize that, although stereotypes pose a risk to IS introductory events, interesting IS tasks can help IS introductory events to fully realize their intended benefits.
