- Abstract:
Designing digital interfaces that accommodate diverse cognitive interaction styles remains a challenge for information systems research. Individuals on the autism spectrum represent an important user group whose ways of perceiving and interacting with digital systems differ from assumptions embedded in conventional interface design. Although prior research has proposed various recommendations for accessible interfaces, existing knowledge remains fragmented across disciplines and is difficult to translate into coherent design guidance. This study synthesizes research on interface accessibility for autistic users through a systematic literature review covering five disciplines and 33 primary studies. The analysis identifies three recurring accessibility requirements: cognitive load reduction, personalization, and interface simplicity. Moreover, it organizes existing recommendations into four interface design dimensions: sensory, interactional, informational, and stylistic design. Building on this synthesis, the study derives consolidated design guidelines for inclusive user interfaces and provides a structured framework for neurodiversity-aware interface design.
