Abstract:

With the increasing use of the Internet, individuals must manage countless accounts across multiple platforms, making it difficult for users to track who is using their data. Self-sovereign identity (SSI), supported by regulations such as GDPR and eIDAS, promises to put control of their data back into the hands of the users. Governments need to understand the sociotechnical challenges of SSI. We conduct a systematic literature review, identifying security and privacy as the most prevalent concerns in the academic literature while social challenges are largely overlooked. Further, we find that the academic literature mostly treats SSI in general rather than focusing on specific application domains.
