My research focuses on agricultural supply chains and the dynamics of sustainability certification, particularly in countries of the Global South. Global demand for raw materials and agricultural products (e. g., coffee, cocoa, soy, and palm oil) often has serious consequences for working conditions and the environment in producing countries. Self-regulation by companies in the Global North, e. g., in the form of voluntary certification systems, is just one of many forms of corporate sustainability governance. I am particularly interested in the (systemic) interaction between a market-based governance mechanism developed in the Global North and the economic, social and environmental realities of producers in the Global South. To this end, I draw upon methods such as simulation (System Dynamics).
