The study “Implications of the Solar Rebound Effect for the European Energy Transition” takes a closer look at the solar rebound effect in Europe: Households that install solar panels often use more electricity because the energy is perceived as “free.” This is the solar rebound effect (SRE). The authors highlight why this additional consumption must be taken into account as a matter of urgency in European energy planning to avoid unnecessary system costs and an unfair distribution of costs – and why consumption patterns aligned with renewable energy generation should be encouraged.
