Commercial and economic relationships with East Asia, especially with China, have gained importance for the European economy. Exports into the growing markets of East Asia represent a driving force of the Western economies. Moreover, they are crucial for their effects both on the German labour market and on the Single European Labour Market. Hence, the economic rise of China calls for a deep understanding of the functioning of the East Asian markets in order to identify the trade opportunities and challenges for the (EU/ German/ Chinese) labour market and for economic growth.

However, the public debate surrounding trade with East Asia often lacks a deeper understanding of the politics and culture in East Asia. Both are important determinants of economic acitivities in many countries of East Asia.

The more ambitious (or broader) aim of the center is to establish an international network of researchers, bringing together experts on China, macro-economists and trade-economists interested in East Asian economies. Hence, the center will establish and organize an annual international workshop on East Asian and Chinese economic studies. The workshop will offer the possibility for researchers to disseminate their work or to meet international scholars, thus fostering collaborations with external research partners. The Center will also create an online platform containing general information and references of the most recent academic work on East Asian macroeconomic studies. It will also gather information on the research activities on East Asian and Chinese economies, such as international conferences, academic events or policy debates. Finally, the Center will also host researchers from other universities and research centers associated with CEAMeS.
