Abstract:

In the context of an increasingly digitised society, theoretical approaches have emerged to address the frictions created by digital technologies in a data-centric culture. Those theoretical approaches focus on aspects like order, subject understanding and socio-cultural changes. Other approaches examine the power asymmetries and polarisations inherent in digital cultures under labels, such as surveillance capitalism, digital disenfranchisement and exploitation 4.0. Contributing to this theoretical view, the current article presents the Economics/Sociology of Conventions (E/SC) as a prism to study these above-mentioned situations, focusing in particular on the emergence and stabilisation of cooperation, frictions and conflicts in the context of decision-making in collaborative situations with health analytics. The digitalisation of healthcare, especially the introduction of AI-based health analytics, presents a notable case study, with technologies like AI (artificial intelligence) and big data aiming to optimise healthcare delivery. This article utilises the E/SC framework to dissect frictions encountered during the adoption of health analytics, and is based on 45 expert interviews. The findings illuminate how health analytics disrupt existing conventions, leading to novel frictions and contributing to the broader dialogue on healthcare’s digital future.
