On this page, we have collected some of the most frequently asked questions about funding for study, internships and short stays abroad.

Details on the funding conditions can be found on the funding program pages:

Erasmus+

PROMOS

Student Status

I am only studying part-time. Can I still apply?

more

Yes. Whether you are a part-time or full-time student does not matter for Erasmus+, Promos and the like.

I am on a postgraduate program. Can I apply?

more

Yes. Postgraduate students who have already completed a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and are now regularly enrolled at the FernUniversität can apply for Erasmus+, PROMOS or other funding. If you have already received funding during your first degree program, you must bear in mind the maximum permissible funding periods.
In contrast, visiting students are admitted to the FernUniversität but not enrolled because they are studying the same subject in parallel at another university in Germany. Visiting students can apply for funding at their home university but not at the FernUniversität.

I am studying in a continuing education course. Why can’t I apply?

more

Only enrolled students are eligible for funding. This does not usually apply for continuing education students who are admitted to the FernUniversität but not regularly enrolled.

Are there any age limits on funding?

more

No. Enrolled students of all ages can apply for Erasmus+, PROMOS and the like.

Funding Level/Income

I will be receiving pay for my internship. Can I still apply for a grant?

more

Yes. This does not have any affect on the amount of a possible grant.

I would like to work during my stay abroad. Is that allowed?

more

Yes. However, it is important that your focus remains on the purpose for which you are being funded, i.e., that any part-time jobs etc. are subordinate to your study abroad/internship.

Study Abroad

I would like to spend a semester abroad at a university in the EU that is not yet on the list of Erasmus+ partner universities. What do I have to do?

more

Please send an email to international with the following information:

  • The preferred period of your semester abroad
  • Your selected university with a brief justification
  • Selected courses and their equivalent value at the FernUniversität (if possible)
  • Enrollment number
  • If possible/available, the e-mail address of your contact person

Please note that this can be quite a complicated procedure and you may need to start up to 1½ years in advance. Your chances of success are greater with less well-known universities in less sought-after countries. Remember also that Erasmus+ is based on reciprocity and the FernUniversität cannot accept incoming students on campus due to its distance-learning structure.

Are there any non-European partner universities?

more

No. As far as student mobility is concerned, the FernUniversität does not yet have any partner universities outside Europe. Consequently, you have a free choice of host institution. You can find out more about the steps involved in planning on the Semester Abroad section of our Stays Abroad – Information for Students web page.

I would like to do a semester abroad, but do not need/want recognition for the work/academic courses/credits I will be doing there. What factors should I pay attention to?

more

Basically, there are three major aspects to planning a semester abroad: finding and applying for a place at a university (or other institute of higher education), applying for financial support, and getting the work you have carried out abroad recognized by the FernUniversität. The latter is the major goal, but in principle you can also study abroad without using the ECTS you have earned there for your FernUni studies. Please note, however, that financial support is generally not possible if you take only non-credit courses. A mix is therefore advantageous. In addition, the courses you complete while abroad can at least be documented in your transcript of records, or similar.

Internships Abroad

What should I consider when choosing a host institution?

more

Basically the same as for an internship in Germany, e.g., the reputability and expertise of the internship provider. Clear stipulations regarding the content and scope of the internship, if necessary within the context of an internship agreement, help to prevent misunderstandings.

I will be receiving pay for my internship. Can I still apply for a grant?

more

Yes. This does not have any affect on the amount of a possible grant.
