- Abstract:
This dissertation investigates emotions and emotion models in the context of information systems (IS) research and use. The dissertation addresses several research aims, which include (1) to show which emotions are displayed in IS research, (2) to understand the current role emotions play in IS research and use, (3) to visualize the future role of emotions when new IS are potentially introduced, and (4) to apply theories related to (basic) emotions to IS use, which offer alternative or extended explanations, such as the Economics of Conventions. To answer these questions, four separate but cumulative essays showcase the dissertation’s results. To obtain results valid for different types of IS, the knowledge management (KM) domain serves as the basis for the first two research questions, while personal virtual assistants (PVAs) that are part of the artificial intelligence (AI) domain provide the setting for the last two questions. This introductory essay summarizes the entire research project by providing an overarching motivation, condensing the foundations, and showing the research questions. Further, it summarizes the entire research process, including the underlying research paradigm and theories, as well as demonstrating how the four independent essays relate to one another. Finally, it discusses the different essays’ results, thereby highlighting the contribution this dissertation makes.
