Prof. Dr. Torsten Linß

Prof. Dr. Torsten Linß has been Chair of Numerical Mathematics at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science at the FernUniversität in Hagen since 2011.

After completing his bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle upon Tyne in 1994, he continued his studies at the TU Dresden, where he received his diploma in mathematics in 1996. After this, his academic career took him to Ireland where he went on to earn his doctorate at University College Cork in 1998.

Between 1998 and 2004, he worked as a research assistant at the TU Dresden. While he was there he took on a junior professorship in Numerical Analysis and Boundary Layer Phenomena and qualified as a professor. Research stays took him to the University of Limerick, Ireland, and the Academy of Sciences in Prague, Czech Republic, as a research fellow in 2009/2010.

In 2010, he took up a post as substitute professor for Numerical Analysis at the University of Duisburg-Essen before being appointed Professor of Numerical Mathematics at the FernUniversität in Hagen in 2011.

Prof. Linß has held various positions in academic administration: from 2014 to 2016 as Vice Dean, from 2022 to 2024 as Dean of Studies, and since May 2024 as Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science. In addition, he served as chair of the Evaluation Commission for Mathematics and Mathematics and Computer Science.

Since 1 June 2025, Prof. Dr. Torsten Linß has been Vice-President for Research, Internationalization, and Sustainability.
