CATALPA – Center of Advanced Technology for Assisted Learning and Predictive Analytics
The Center of Advanced Technology for Assisted Learning and Predictive Analytics (CATALPA) is the interdisciplinary research center at FernUniversität in Hagen. Here, we bring together computer science, engineering, psychology, social research, education, and law to not only support digital transformations but also actively shape them.

The ABD research focus area: Digital Health addresses issues related to the digitization of the healthcare system and thereby contributes to improving care and prevention through digitization. Through interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary research and development projects, digital solutions are developed for existing problems, and their implementation is supported and shaped.

How do digital technologies influence our culture and society? The research focus digital culture at FernUniversität Hagen examines the interactions between digital innovations and cultural processes, particularly in the fields of society, art, media, and communication. The goal is to understand the transformation of culture through digitization and to develop new perspectives for analyzing digital phenomena.

What sets research at the FernUniversität in Hagen apart?
Research at FernUniversität in Hagen is rooted in digital technology, interdisciplinary in nature, and socially grounded. We focus our expertise on three key areas: Energy and Sustainability, Digital Culture, and ABD: Digital Health. We integrate these topics across faculty boundaries to address complex societal challenges. With research centers such as CATALPA and initiatives such as the LEAD:FUH educational architecture project, we are shaping the future of learning. At the same time, we support early-career researchers, uphold the integrity of research, and actively contribute our findings to policy, business, and the public sphere. For us, knowledge transfer is a third mission—alongside research and teaching.
