Prof. Dr. Stefan Smolnik was appointed Professor of Business Administration, in particular Business Application Systems (page in German), at the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at the FernUniversität in 2013. From 2008 to 2013, he was a junior professor at the EBS Business School in Wiesbaden/Oestrich-Winkel. He spent 2009 as a visiting researcher at the Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh (PA). After studying computer science, he completed his doctorate in business informatics at the Groupware Competence Center at the University of Paderborn in 2005.

His research and publications focus on science management, collaboration systems and social software, smart cities/smart mobility, and digital transformation. He was a founding member of the Digitalization, Diversity and Lifelong Learning (D²L², now CATALPA) research cluster and is also a member of the Energy, Environment and Sustainability Research Center (E/E/S). He regularly hosts (mini-)tracks at international conferences and is active as a reviewer for renowned journals.

From 2020 to 2022, he served as deputy chair of the Senate of the FernUniversität, and from 2016 to 2022, he was a member of the Faculty Council of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics. He is also a member of numerous scientific organizations including the Association of University Teachers of Business Administration, the German Informatics Society, and the Association for Information Systems (AIS). He has also gained experience in academic administration as acting head of the Department of Supply Chain Management & Information Systems and head of the Institute of Research on Information Systems at the EBS Business School.

Stefan Smolnik has been Vice-President for Research and Digitization at the FernUniversität since 2 March 2022.
