The FernUniversität in Hagen is the university of lifelong learning. With its flexible study model, its socially relevant research initiatives, and nationwide infrastructure, it offers attractive opportunities for collaboration with partners from business, politics and civil society.
As the university’s “third mission,” knowledge transfer, collaboration and continuing education are an integral part of the FernUniversität. These community outreach activities are both anchored locally in Hagen and linked to the supra-regional locations of the FernUniversität.
Our Berlin Office for Transfer & Cooperation reflects the special national importance of the FernUniversität.
You can find more information on the FernUniversität’s outreach and collaboration projects and the university’s knowledge transfer strategy can be found on our Transfer website.

The FernUniversität in Hagen

The FernUniversität in Hagen is unique. This is because it is the only state-run distance learning university in the German-speaking world.
For over 50 years , it has been the place to go for all those who are looking for a fully-fledged academic education but do not want to or cannot enroll at an on-campus university.
It offers around 30 bachelor’s and master’s degree programs as well as numerous academic continuing education programs in the fields of humanities and social sciences, business administration and economics, mathematics and computer science, and law.
More than any other state university, its large proportion of professionally active students ensures that scientific expertise translates directly into real-world economic and policy impact.
Facts and Figures

More than 1,800 employees, over 70,000 students. The majority of students are employed and – on average – between 29 and 35 years old.
Many already have a vocational qualification. There are more students without a high-school diploma at the FernUniversität than at any other German university.
The university’s figures are impressive, but also grounds for an important discussion: because 80 percent of the budget is borne by the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, although the students live all over Germany.
