For the public history seminar, we propose a joint visit to the permanent exhibition at Haus der Geschichte (Bonn) — “Du bist Teil der Geschichte. Deutschland seit 1945.” The exhibition was completely redesigned at the end of 2025.

The exhibition is dedicated to the history of Germany after 1945 and offers not only a chronological overview of political events, but also a reflection on how historical memory is shaped through personal stories, museum objects, and interactive forms of visitor participation.

Within the framework of the seminar, we will examine the museum as a tool of public history: how the exhibition constructs a national narrative, which themes and social groups are placed at the center of attention and which remain on the margins, and how emotional and interactive mechanisms of audience engagement are employed.

Particular attention will be paid to contemporary approaches to representing the memory of divided Germany, migration, democratization, and the reassessment of the National Socialist past. Participants will discuss how museums today work with historical trauma, collective memory, and the idea of visitor “participation” in history.
