The accident at the Chornobyl nuclear power plant in 1986 had long-term consequences for the whole of Europe. The occupation of the Chornobyl and Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plants by Russian troops in 2022 proves once again that “peaceful atom” can be a dangerous weapon. This course focuses on the social, political, and cultural reactions to the Chornobyl nuclear disaster, with a particular emphasis on the emergence and evolution of the anti-nuclear movement in Europe after 1986. Using specific examples, we will examine how accidents on the nuclear power plants have changed public awareness, activism, and politics. Special attention will be paid on public historical perspective to the anti-nuclear movement in the context of Russia’s war against Ukraine. During the seminar, there will be a tour of the Zwentendorf Nuclear Power Plant.
