CATALPA Lecture Series with Tobias Ley

Intelligent systems need intelligent teachers in hybrid intelligent systems: That is a key message from Prof. Dr. Tobias Ley in his upcoming presentation. On November 25, he will be a guest speaker at the CATALPA Lecture Series. The event begins at 4:00 p.m. in Building 5, Room B103.

The CATALPA Lecture Series is entering its next round. This time, the guest speaker is Prof. Dr. Tobias Ley. He heads the Center for Digitalization in Lifelong Learning at the University for Continuing Education in Krems and holds a professorship in Learning Analytics and Educational Innovation at Tallinn University in Estonia. His topic:

Towards the creation of Hybrid Intelligent Systems in Education

Artificial Intelligence promises to be more than an educational tool, but is increasingly seen as an autonomous actor in the educational space. Teachers use AI to create learning materials and engaging lessons, monitor student learning, or even grade assignments. The way teachers and AI work together to support student learning has been variably termed teacher-AI collaboration, teaming or complementarity. A common goal in these configurations is that some form of complementarity is the aim where the strengths of both human and artificial actors are combined to produce superior performance. Creation of such "hybrid intelligent systems", however, has far reaching consequences for education. As a result, their design should be carefully considered and both short-term and long-term consequences need to be considered.

In the talk, Tobias Ley will focus on two research fields instrumental for realizing this vision: the design of intelligent systems that are driven by transparent pedagogical principles and models, and the preparation of teachers that goes well beyond training of AI literacy. Both elements are needed to build adaptive hybrid systems that preserve teacher agency and benefit learners. I illustrate these research directions with recent research on teacher-AI complementarity, model-based learning analytics and teacher professional development that integrates use of AI as a situated practice.

About Tobias Ley

Tobias Ley is Professor of Learning Analytics and Educational Innovation at Tallinn University, Estonia, and Head of the Center for Digitalisation in Lifelong Learning at the University for Continuing Education Krems, Austria. For more than 25 years, his research has focused on the use of intelligent technologies to support professional and workplace learning, as well as teacher professional development.

His work has received several scientific awards, including the European Research Award for Vocational Education and Training and the Estonian National Science Award in the Social Sciences. He has led numerous large-scale research projects and multidisciplinary teams, securing multimillion-euro funding and advancing innovation in learning technology research at the intersection of education, psychology, and computer science. Tobias holds a PhD and a Habilitation in Cognitive Science from the University of Graz, Austria.
