Events at the CATALPA Graduate School

Postersymposium Foto: CATALPA

The CATALPA Graduate School offers various event formats to equip researchers with the best possible skills for a career in science.

  • At CATALPA, colleagues from various disciplines, including psychology, computational linguistics, educational science, computer science, and organizational sociology, conduct research at the FernUniversität in Hagen on topics such as AI in higher education, personalized learning, and the use of learning technologies to support teaching and learning. The interdisciplinary colloquium aims to create space for a deeper understanding of and exchange about research projects within CATALPA, promote collegial exchange, and offer opportunities to initiate interdisciplinary collaborations. The primary focus will be on presenting doctoral projects in order to offer all doctoral candidates within CATALPA comprehensive feedback and professional support. The colloquium takes place every first Wednesday of the month from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.

  • All CATALPA PhD candidates and postdocs meet at the annual poster symposiums held in November. The doctoral candidates exchange information about the current status of their research, their methodological approaches, and open questions, engage in open discussions, learn from each other, and grow together as a network.

  • Every year, (interdisciplinary) workshops are offered for doctoral students within the CATALPA research training program. These include courses such as Successful Publishing, Interdisciplinary Research Methods, Mixed Methods Approaches, Science Slam, Research in Virtual Space, Software Engineering, etc.

  • The CATALPA Lecture Series is a quarterly event series open to the university community. The event consists of a lecture by researchers from CATALPA or external guests, followed by a discussion.

Collaboration & internal networking

The CATALPA Graduate School and CATALPA as a whole are more than just a place for research. Networking and socializing are also essential components of our work culture and contribute to a pleasant and productive working environment in which ideas are shared and innovations are initiated.

  • In monthly Brown Bag Meetings, research staff get together over lunch to exchange information and offer each other advice. These informal meetings, which are similar in nature to peer mentoring, provide an opportunity to discuss common topics, share experiences, advise each other on questions and problems, and work out solutions together.

  • The summer parties and Christmas celebrations, with opportunities for socializing, playing games, and other events, strengthen the sense of community within CATALPA.

Individual organization & career development

The core area of individual organization & career development is geared toward supporting doctoral candidates in their personal development and providing them with important skills for future career planning. The Graduate Service at FernUniversität in Hagen offers a wide range of continuing education courses each semester. All doctoral candidates have access to these courses and can select those that best suit their level of knowledge and professional goals.
