[18.06.2026]Im Rahmen des Oberseminars des Lehrgebiets „Künstliche Intelligenz“ hält am Donnerstag, den 18. Juni 2026, um 10:00 Uhr, Herr Prof. Dr. Massimiliano Giacomin (University of Brescia) einen Vortrag zum Thema
"Polymorphic Attacks in ASPIC+ and ASPICR: Conceptual Issues and Technical Perspectives".
Abstract:
This presentation provides a first analysis of polymorphic attacks in structured argumentation, focusing on the ASPIC+ and ASPICR formalisms. Polymorphic attacks occur when the same attacking relation can be classified in more than one way, for instance as undercutting, rebutting, or undermining.
Although current definitions implicitly accommodate this phenomenon without compromising the technical correctness of the formalisms, polymorphic attacks raise conceptual questions concerning the role of preferences, the interpretation of defence, and the generation of defeats. The presentation first illustrates how polymorphic attacks may arise in ASPIC+, including realistic reasoning scenarios, and then examines their occurrence in ASPICR, where attacks from sets of arguments and extended contrariness relations give rise to further cases. Finally, it discusses possible refinements based on explicit attack sets and parametric defeat generation functions, outlining directions for future work on alternative treatments and rationality postulates.
